The Past
Pele shook her head. “It’s a long story. Longer than I realized my story could be until recently. When you danced at the luau, the fire spoke to me. I understood it as clearly as I can understand you. I looked around to see if anyone else knew and heard it, too. Its message boiled down to, ‘Remember and come to me.’
“He spoke like an old lover, and it scared me, especially when no one else seemed affected. I ran and hid until I realized that if I ever wanted to know who I was, I had to know what he had to tell me. It was the only way.
“That night I built the largest bonfire I had ever made, or at least remembered making, and stepped inside. The fire engulfed me, covering my ears until all I heard was its dull roar. I thought I would die, but I didn't. The fire cradled me like a baby and whispered to me. I asked it questions and it answered. It answered! It was crazy but so liberating. I began to remember everything from my past.”
“What is your past?”
“It is more complex than you realize. I am not your average woman.”
He laughed at Pele. “I could have told you that.”
Pele shook her head but smiled. “What you couldn’t have told me was that my parents were some of the first people to inhabit the land. They learned who the nature spirits were and communed with them. They understood them because that whole time was more primal, chaotic. The elements have been tamed by the humans, but not completely. Without the proper sacrifices, we all know the raw power they can unleash into the land.
“My parents taught my sister and I everything they knew about the spirits and encouraged us to watch them on our own. They wanted us to find what element spoke the most to us: fire, wind, rain, water.
“I found my element quickly enough. After all, fire was everywhere. The lava spewed near our home, using its heat to create new land, and I tended the cooking fires at home ever since we learned that I was best with the fickle flames.
“My sister was jealous and tried desperately to achieve similar results with some other element. She could sense them, but none of them chose her as its bosom friend the same way fire chose me. I thought she was happy, but I guess she grew jealous of my popularity with the other people. One day she couldn’t take it anymore and ran away. It was there, in the snow of the mountains, that she learned her true nature.
“But she wasn’t content to just know her affinity. She wanted to be more powerful than me, to show off to our parents and prove she was the better daughter. I don’t know what came over her, but she united, bonded in the deepest levels, with a snow spirit. Connected to a human, it became more powerful than it ever was on its own.
